Visitors always comment
that with 30+ years in the same spot we must have seen major
changes.
I reply with conviction;
"The East Village is still the same". It was a 30
something's neighborhood when we arrived in 1979 and it's still
a 30 something's place to live in and enjoy now. Start up
businesses are the norm just like in the old days, but food is
definitely much improved. Crime is now confined to parking
tickets so many ex-neighbors grab cabs or the subway and spend
the day in the old hood. It's a place you'll always want
to come back to with a touch of grunge to keep it real.
THE SHAPE OF LIES®
opened it's doors in New York's
East Village January 1st 1979. So far as we know we're the
only
Mom & Pop residential store
left in the neighborhood. We boast both an original tin ceiling and
a real wooden screen door! As our neighbors know; when the lights on
you can always knock for gifting emergencies....we live in back!
We design our own line of museum jewelry,
dedicated to reviving archetypal symbols and images created by
artisans throughout the ages. If you crave something
with an ancient resonance ask about these
unusual items with intellectual and spiritual value.
In 2006 we began adding local designers who produced their
products in Manhattan, mixing it
up has been lots of fun. Our shop goal is to have only designs
made in America and the New York metropolitan area in
particular. So far so good, lots of talent to support
close at hand.
Finally in 2009 we did a 190 back to our roots as artists.
The long wall has been cleared away to make room for our own
personal art gallery of original paintings. We now
sell prints of the major pieces at a much more friendly price
for new collectors.

tell you a little local history and recommend some local
eateries. After all half the fun of "shopping” the
East Village is “eating” the East Village. Cheers!
